Check out Gia Marie Carangi (January 29, 1960 – November 18, 1986), a legendary American fashion model who ruled the scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Some folks consider her the first supermodel, and she was all over the covers of top fashion mags like Vogue and Cosmopolitan. She also slayed in ad campaigns for big-name fashion houses like Armani, Christian Dior, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent.
But things took a dark turn when she got hooked on heroin; her modeling career went downhill fast. At just 26, she died from AIDS-related complications, becoming one of the first famous women to succumb to the disease. Her wild and tragic life was brought to life in the HBO TV film Gia, starring Angelina Jolie, which dropped in 1998.
