Check out Emanuela Rusta, born December 18, 1993, in Elbasan, Albania, who’s a trailblazing football referee. Originally into basketball, she got hooked on refereeing after a visit from ref Enea Jorgji at her school. In March 2019, Rusta made waves as the first chick to serve as a lineswoman in the Kategoria Superiore, Albania’s top men’s league.
By the end of the 2021/22 season, she was calling the shots as the main referee. Now, as the first Albanian female FIFA ref, she’s part of UEFA’s elite First Category refs.
Rusta is also a fierce advocate for gender equality and is taking on sexism in Albanian football, getting major attention for reffing men’s matches. She’s all about proving that refereeing is about skills, not gender.
